Anestesi atau pembiusan adalah pengurangan atau penghilangan sensasi untuk sementara, sehingga operasi atau prosedur lain yang menyakitkan dapat dilakukan.

Ada dua jenis anestesi:

• umum, yang membuat pasien tak sadar
• lokal, yang membuat mati rasa bagian tubuh yang akan diambil tindakan.

Tidur yang diinduksi anestesi tidak sama dengan tidur biasa, tetapi suatu bentuk ketidaksadaran sementara yang secara hati-hati dikendalikan oleh dokter anestesi. Setiap jenis operasi membutuhkan pengelolaan jumlah yang tepat dari anestesi. Meskipun pasien dibius tapi pasien tetep napas kok, makanya kita pasang selang-selang dengan segala prosedurnya dengan tujuan melancarkan jalan napas si pasien.
